Writing in 2019 — Ham Radio and More

My writing career began in 1976 when Wayne Green, W2NSD, the publisher of 73 Magazine, agreed to let me try to write a short book on single sideband. First he asked me to publish a couple of articles for his magazine.

I accomplished this with a couple of articles and the book was published as well. You can find more information at Early Ham Radio Article Writing. From there I was fortunate enough to convince Heathkit that I could write home study courses. Once they saw my writing, they set to work teaching me how to really write.

So while writing competence was not always with me, at least the motivation to write was almost always there.

In 2019, while my freelance writing business is mostly closed, I did manage to write quite a few articles. That included 22 blog posts on this website and another five articles on LinkedIn. I wrote a great deal of promotional information and newsletters for my church’s capital campaign as well as an article on the World Scout Jamboree for the Boy Scouts of America’s Retiree Newsletter — Now and Then. Plus, there was all that writing of operations manuals and responses to corporate mayhem leading up the Jamboree.

I’ve further been honored to write for the Monthly FB News with these articles:

I also published a couple of articles in QST magazine – June 2019 issue, World Scout Jamboree, a preview and plea to get on the air and work the station; and the after action report in December 2019, Amateur Radio at the World Scout Jamboree. And in the May 2019 issue I contributed a couple photos and short sidebar to Introduction to VHF+ Roving.

While those are good articles, my favorite has just been published in ARRL’s National Contest Journal January/February 2020 issue. It’s titled K5ND’s VHF Limited Rover Experience, insights that might help your rover journey. The print magazine is in black and white but ARRL sent a proof copy in color. You can find it at this link 01 January-February NCJ Wilson or click on the image below.

Have keyboard, will write. Let’s see what 2020 brings.
